The Middlefield Wasps travelled to Edinburgh to play in the Edinburgh Cup at Peffermill Playing Fields in Edinburgh. A party of 16 left Aberdeen on Friday the 1st of August and travelled down to Newhouse where the group were staying in THE PREMIER INN. On the Saturday morning we travelled through to Edinburgh for the start of the competition. The Wasps players that travelled were Harry Smith, Ryan Stephenson Brandon Hunter, Declan Mcgunnigle, Lewis Ross, Reece Matthew, Lewis Paton and Connor Ross. Our first game was a 3 - 0 victory against Liberton United. The Wasps take the field looking the part in their new strip donated by Dresser Rand. A very good performance from the lads here with Lewis Ross opening the scoring from 25 yards with a well struck shot.. The second goal was a very well worked goal scored by Reece Matthew after a great passing move involving Lewis Paton and Lewis Ross. The third goal was scored by Lewis Paton after a well struck shot from Reece Matthew was spilled by the keeper and Lewis was in the right place to knock the rebound into the net for THE WASPS to record a nice victory. Our second game was against Leith Atheltic. We were well beaten 5 - 0 by a very strong and well organised team. Our boys looked very tired in this game but credit to them for fighting until the very end. Our third and final game of the day was against Westerton Utd which ended in a 1 - 1 draw. The Wasps played very well in this game and were unlucky not to win the game. The Wasps fell behind to an early goal but credit to kids for fighting back in the second half and getting the equalising goal they deserved. A good run by Declan Mcgunnigle allowing Lewis Ross to knock the ball into the net for a cool finish. The Wasps battled to the end but couldn't find the winning goal. A good performance to finish the day, with the lads deserving lots of credit for their efforts and skill put in against 3 very good teams. After our last game we returned to our hotel to get showered and changed for our journey to THE M + D PARK in Motherwell. We spent 4 HRS in the park with all of the kids, Gavin, Neil and Darren going on as many rides as they possibly could. It was good to see the kids enjoy themselves so much and i was surprised to see they still had energy left after all the running they did in the morning. After the Park we returned to the hotel for our evening meal before going to bed. Next morning we were able to relax a bit as our first game did not kick off till 2pm.We woke up and had breakfast at the hotel before travelling through to Edinburgh for our remaining 3 games. Our first game on the Sunday was against Liberton Utd again and believe it not we beat them 3 - 0 again. The first goal was scored by Ryan Stevenson. A tremendous strike from 30 yards into the top corner. The second goal was scored by Lewis Paton after a knock down from a well taken corner by Lewis Ross to give The Wasps a 2-0 lead. In the second half Lewis Paton added another after Declan put him through on goals with a cool finish. A nice start to the day with The Wasps playing there best football of the competition so far. Our second game was against Leith Athletic and The Wasps were very unfortunate to lose this game 4 - 0. The Wasps were trailing 1- 0 with 5 mins to go before Ryan Stevenson was taken off injured, losing 3 goals after this setback.. The fight and effort shown by the lads in this game did not deserve the final result because at 1 - 0 THE WASPS were pushing for the equaliser. A terrific display from the lads despite the result. Our final game of the tournament was against Westerton Utd. The final score being 1 - 1 again. Yet again The Wasps played some nice football and fought back from being a goal down in the first half. The Wasps equalised in the second half with a nice run and cross from Reece Matthew being turned into the net by Lewis Ross for a well worked goal. The Wasps kept going until the end but couldn't find away past the Westerton KEEPER. A nice way to finish the tournament. The Wasps played well in 2 games on the Saturday, but on the Sunday The Wasps played with much more skill and passion. A very good tournament from the boys. A very worthwhile visit, with lovely hotel, friendly staff, and hard games for the kids. The kids deserve great credit for the way they behaved and for the effort and commitment shown in the games. After receiving their medals we began our journey home. On our way home we stop in by Burger King so the kids could have something to eat. I would like to thank the parents who made the trip for their support and help through out. Photos of the trip to Edinburgh will be hopefully on our web page in the next couple of days. Middlefield Wasps were the furthest travelled football team at this years event. Mr P. Paton. Mr. G. Ross. More photos to follow very soon!
